Abstract

This article sheds light on the meaning of “ijtihad”, its prophetic basis and its practical expression among the companions. After explaining the literal and terminological definition of ijtihad, its basic components and objectives, it is made clear that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) exercised ijtihad in matters where there was no explicit text despite the direct guidance of revelation. His ijtihads were always subject to the confirmation or correction of revelation and thus he laid the foundation for a consistent methodology for the ummah.

This is followed by a description of the ijtihad decisions of the companions (ﷺ) which they made in the light of the insight they gained from the direct training of the prophet. In their ijtihads, adherence to the Quran and Sunnah, consideration of the public interest, shura practice and religious zeal are prominent. The decisions of Hazrat Umar (RA), Hazrat Ali (RA), and Hazrat Abdullah bin Masood (RA) and other great companions are evidence that their Ijtihad was not just a personal opinion but a continuation of the Prophetic path which included flexibility, wisdom and a deep awareness of the collective good of the Ummah.

Furthermore, the last part of the article discusses the importance and necessity of Ijtihad in the context of the present era. In order to solve today’s complex intellectual, social and legal problems, it is necessary to promote serious and purposeful Ijtihad in the light of the Quran and Sunnah and the path of the righteous predecessors. Thus, Ijtihad is not only a means of developing Islamic law but also guarantees the intellectual and cultural survival of the Muslim Ummah and the preservation of Islamic identity.
