The Ijtihād of the Companions (RA) in Hadith Interpretation and Its Effects: A Research-Based Study

Abstract

This article is a detailed research study on the method of Ijtihad of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) in the interpretation of Hadiths and its effects. The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) held the great position of direct companionship of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and they directly benefited from the source of the Quran and Sunnah. This direct connection and closeness to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) gave their Ijtihads a special sanctity and extraordinary scholarly prestige. This study has made it clear that the Ijtihad of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) was not the result of any personal opinion or mere speculation, but was based on the texts of the Holy Quran, the direct guidance of the Prophet’s Sunnah, the practical lessons of the righteous life, and a deep awareness of the collective interests of the Ummah.

The article has also examined the fact that the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) adopted different styles in interpreting Hadiths. Some of them explained the words in terms of their meaning and context, some interpreted the hadiths as interpretations of the Quran, and some interpreted them through practical events and consensus. These ijtihadist ways of thinking strengthened the basic structure of Islamic jurisprudence and law and provided guiding principles for mujtahids and jurists in later periods.

This study also highlights that the ijtihads of the Companions not only became a milestone in the formation of Islamic law but also left a legacy of scholarly tradition, religious moderation, intellectual depth, and practical insight that remains a beacon of light for the Muslim Ummah to this day. The ijtihadist principles of the Companions also provide guidance for solving the intellectual and jurisprudential problems of the present day, because their methodology was not only based on revelation and Sunnah, but also clarified the paths of wisdom, expediency, and moderation. Thus, this article highlights the fact that the ijtihad methods of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) are the foundation of the comprehensive and comprehensive intellectual system of Islam in the interpretation of Hadith, and their effects will always be alive and shining in the history of Islamic sciences.
