Abstract
Islam is a universal religion that covers all areas of human life, including faith, worship, ethics, economy, politics, and society. Its identity is linked to certain special symbols and practices, which the Qur’an calls Shaʿāʾir Allah (symbols of God). These symbols form the core principles of the religion.
In Islamic law, disrespect of these symbols is not only a moral wrongdoing but is also treated as clear disbelief. Because of this, different Islamic schools of thought have issued rulings that include punishments such as the death penalty or other penalties, depending on the severity of the act.
If a non-Muslim under protection (dhimmi) commits such disrespect, it is considered a breach of their agreement, ending their protected status and allowing legal action under Islamic law. Islam teaches both Muslims and non-Muslims to respect these symbols.
Pakistan’s laws also reflect this principle. Disrespect toward Islamic symbols is a criminal act, and insulting the religious feelings or sacred figures of non-Muslim minorities is also punishable. Sections 295-A and 298 of the Pakistan Penal Code protect the sanctity of all religions.
