The research demonstrates that the translators' cognitive frameworks—comprising their personal beliefs, interpretive paradigms, and ideological leanings—have a significant impact on how metaphors are conveyed. These influences can either enhance the clarity and conceptual understanding of the metaphors or, conversely, restrict their spiritual or rhetorical subtleties, depending on the translator’s priorities. The findings underscore the critical importance of recognizing and critically assessing potential biases introduced by translators, advocating for translations that are faithful, balanced, and sensitive to contextual nuances. This comprehensive study explores the semantic and interpretive aspects of Quranic metaphors (istiarah) within a carefully selected set of verses, aiming to understand how the intellectual orientations and ideological predispositions of translators influence the way these metaphors are rendered into different languages.

By referencing classical Tafsir Ibn Abbas, a renowned exegesis, the research conducts a comparative analysis of translations produced by three prominent scholars: Maulana Mazharul Haq, Maulana Shabbir Ahmad Usmani, and Maulana Maududi. The analysis pays close attention to variations in lexical choices, the depth of explanation, and how metaphoric expressions are presented across these translations. The study reveals that each translator’s approach is shaped by their unique worldview and interpretive priorities. For instance, Mazharul Haq’s translations tend to embody a traditional perspective that is closely anchored in the original text, emphasizing ethical and educational aspects, and striving to preserve the spiritual integrity of the metaphors. In contrast, Shabbir Ahmad Usmani’s renderings prioritize doctrinal accuracy and show a deep reverence for the textual tradition, often opting for minimal interpretive elaboration to maintain the purity of the original metaphors. Meanwhile, Maududi’s translations are characterized by a reformist outlook that incorporates socio-political and practical considerations, frequently expanding on the conceptual and functional dimensions of the metaphors to align with contemporary societal concerns.

 Moreover, this study highlights the broader implications for translation scholarship, emphasizing the need for standardized approaches to metaphorical interpretation in Quranic translation. It advocates for aligning translator cognition with the original text’s semantics to ensure accurate and meaningful renderings. The research also calls for rigorous methodological practices in comparative exegesis, encouraging a careful examination of how ideological and intellectual predispositions shape translation choices. Ultimately, the findings suggest that a nuanced understanding of the translator’s role is essential for producing translations that faithfully convey the richness and depth of Quranic metaphors, fostering a more informed and reflective engagement with the sacred text.
