Abstract

Imam Abu al-Husayn Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Qudūrī (d. 428 AH / 1037 CE) is recognized as one of the most influential jurists of the Hanafi school, and his celebrated work Mukhtaṣar al-Qudūrī remains foundational within the canon of Hanafi legal literature. This study offers a comprehensive analysis of Imam al-Qudūrī’s life, scholarly contributions, and methodological legacy, while examining the enduring authority of his Mukhtaṣar in both classical jurisprudence and contemporary legal discourse. Drawing on biographical collections, juristic commentaries, works of rijāl and fiqh, as well as modern academic research, the study contextualizes the intellectual environment in which al-Qudūrī lived and highlights the distinctive features that elevated him to a position of prominence among the early Hanafi jurists. A major focus of the paper is the significance of Mukhtaṣar al-Qudūrī within the tradition of Hanafi mutūn. The text’s clarity, precision, and careful selection of authoritative opinions facilitated its adoption as a central teaching manual for centuries, forming the backbone of instruction in madāris across the Muslim world. The research analyzes the methodological structure of the Mukhtaṣar—its reliance on transmitted rulings, avoidance of unnecessary juristic debate, and balanced presentation of dominant and alternative opinions—while addressing contemporary misconceptions, including claims of alleged tasāmuḥāt (excessive ease) attributed to Imam al-Qudūrī.

The study further explores the contemporary relevance of Mukhtaṣar al-Qudūrī, demonstrating how its principles continue to inform modern legal deliberations on issues such as financial ethics, gender matters, worship, and personal law. It argues that meaningful engagement with al-Qudūrī’s methodology requires integrating classical juristic tools with contemporary hermeneutical approaches. Ultimately, the paper concludes that the scholarly legacy of Imam al-Qudūrī remains vital for understanding Hanafi jurisprudence and that his Mukhtaṣar provides a foundational, reliable, and adaptable framework for addressing emerging fiqh challenges in the modern world.
