Abstract

This research study presents a comprehensive and detailed review of the scholarly, intellectual and historical criticisms of the narrations of Abu Hurayrah. Hazrat Abu Hurayrah is the most eloquent companion among the companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), who’s narrations constitute the primary source in almost every jurisprudential, exegetical and biographical chapter. While the number and diversity of his narrations have provided the Muslim Ummah with valuable scholarly capital, questions have also been raised about them at different times. These objections have sometimes been raised on the abundance of narrations, sometimes on the memorization and power of memory, and sometimes on the interpretation of certain hadiths in the political and social context. In this study, all these objections have been collected in a historical and thematic order. At the same time, the intellectual background of the critics, their reasoning, and the trends found in their writings have also been viewed from a critical perspective. The study has made a scientific analysis of the narrations of Abu Hurairah (RA) based on the principles of hadith, jarh wa tadil, and the rules of asma al-rijal (male names) in order to determine where the objections have scientific weight and where they are merely related to intellectual or sectarian bias. Furthermore, this study has included the statements of classical hadith scholars such as Imam Bukhari (RA), Imam Muslim (RA), Yahya bin Mu’een (RA), and Imam Dhahabi (RA) as evidence to support the authenticity of the narrations of Abu Hurairah (RA) and to understand their place in a historical context.
